Dear Visitors,
It is my pleasure to welcome you to the official webpage of the ICAR-National Meat Research Institute (NMRI), Hyderabad.
At NMRI, we are driven by a relentless commitment to advancing the meat industry through cutting-edge research, innovation, and a dedication to quality and safety.
The Indian meat sector is a dynamic and diverse industry that plays a significant role in the country's economy, providing employment opportunities and contributing to both domestic consumption and exports. The country has one of the largest livestock populations globally, with a substantial number of cattle, buffalo, sheep, goats, and poultry. This abundance of livestock serves as a foundation for meat production and processing.
India ranks 5th in meat production in the world. Meat production in the country has increased from 6.69 million tonnes in 2014-15 to 9.77 million tonnes in 2022-23. The meat production has shown positive growth as 5.62 % during 2021-23. The per capita meat availability is 7.10 kg/annum.
India boasts a rich variety of meats, including mutton, chicken, pork, and buffalo meat. Each region contributes to the diverse range of meat products, reflecting cultural and dietary preferences. While traditional methods of animal husbandry and local slaughterhouses still prevail, modern practices and technologies are increasingly integrated into the meat production process. This blend caters to the demands of a growing population and evolving consumer preferences.
The meat sector significantly contributes to India's economy, both through direct and indirect means. Livestock rearing and meat processing generate income for millions of farmers, creating a substantial economic impact. India has emerged as a major player in the global meat market. Buffalo meat, in particular, is a significant export commodity, with Indian exporters catering to diverse international markets. Strict adherence to quality standards has enhanced the country's reputation in the global meat trade.
The sector faces challenges related to hygiene, infrastructure, and regulatory compliance. However, these challenges also present opportunities for improvement and growth. Initiatives to address these issues can further elevate the standards of the Indian meat industry.
The Indian government has undertaken various initiatives to boost the meat sector, focusing on animal welfare, disease control, and quality standards. These efforts aim to enhance the overall productivity and sustainability of the industry.
Evolving consumer preferences, driven by factors such as health consciousness and culinary diversity, are influencing the meat sector. This shift encourages innovation in processing techniques and the introduction of value-added products.
There is an increasing awareness of the environmental impact of the meat sector. Sustainable practices, including better waste management and environmentally friendly production methods, are gaining attention.
Our focus extends from the farm to the consumer, encompassing every aspect of the meat supply chain. Through rigorous scientific exploration, we aim to enhance livestock welfare, improve processing methods, and contribute to the development of sustainable and safe meat products.
NMRI is not just a centre for research but also a hub for education and collaboration. We actively engage with industry professionals, farmers, and policymakers, conducting training programs and workshops to share knowledge and best practices.
As you navigate through our webpage, I encourage you to explore the wealth of information about our ongoing projects, research findings, and the comprehensive services we provide.
As it navigates challenges and embraces opportunities, the sector is poised to play an integral role in India's economic development and global trade.
Together, let us shape a healthier and more resilient future for the meat industry.
Dr.S.B.Barbuddhe,
Director
